I had the pleasure of playing in Toronto this past weekend, in the band of my old college roommate, Jules Estrin. Jules is a very fine trombonist who just completed a Masters degree in jazz at the University of Toronto. We played at the Home Smith Jazz Bar at the Old Mill. It was a beautiful venue with a nice Yamaha grand piano and an attentive, listening audience.
Along with bassist/author Mike Downes, we played three sets of jazz standards which I’ll post below, for the benefit of musicians who are either engaged in learning (or reviewing) repertoire.
Set 1:
Four (Eb)
Someday My Prince Will Come (Bb)
You Stepped Out Of A Dream (C)
If You Could See Me Now (Ab) Bossa
Pennies From Heaven (Ab)
Set 2:
I’ve Got Rhythm
September In The Rain (Eb)
Laura (C) Bossa
I Thought About You (F)
Emily (C)
After You’ve Gone (C)
Set 3:
Sweet Georgia Brown (Ab)
Star Eyes (Eb)
Blues In The Closet
Emily and September in the Rain are two pieces I haven’t played in a few years but plan to add to my own set lists in the near future.
